Tower Tech Pump Heads Head Off Big Energy Spending

Author William Feather said, “Wealth flows from energy and ideas.” Feather didn’t mean it this way, but anyone who has had the idea of making energy-efficient improvements to their home or business knows that wealth can flow from power savings.

Capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) are essential considerations when selecting equipment like a cooling tower. Tower Tech modular cooling towers have an exceptional track record for energy savings – up to 10% or even more – that can yield greater operational efficiency and better bottom lines.

Pump Heads Dramatically Impact Energy Use

Gravity wants to pull things down, but cooling towers need to draw water up to do their job. For Newtonian fluids like water, the “head” is the measurement of the kinetic energy created by a centrifugal (center-fleeing) pump. The “head” in a cooling tower is the height the water must travel vertically when pumped. Physics bears out that the taller the tower, the higher the head must be and the harder the pump has to work. And the harder the pump has to work, the higher the energy use and costs will be.

Significant Savings

The cooling tower is one part of the larger HVAC system, but the energy consumption of a cooling tower can be the difference between bank-breaking power bills and energy efficiency.

Kilowatt (kW) usage is the clearest way to assess savings. A simple comparison of height or pump head energy required to run water through an open-system cooling tower versus a Tower Tech modular tower tells the whole story in numbers. For example, if the Tower Tech pump head requires only 12-foot versus the 19- to 22-foot of a popular competitor tower, the savings, based on an assigned cost of electricity per foot of pumping head energy, is easily calculable.

These savings are indisputable after seeing the parametric physical data of our design, but you don’t have to take our word for it. Tower Tech customers The Houstonian and Geisinger Health each reported 10-15% energy savings compared to other cooling towers.
